There is a very common and popular quote which states “BAD NEWS SELLS”, from the said quote, will it be just to chastise any blogger or writer from making air waves with their stories being it good or bad, positive or negative, factual or not? (your answers are as good as mine).
Bloggers in Ghana have come under series of criticisms and backlash from the public and mostly the celebrities in Ghana due to the fact that, if not all, most of these bloggers are unprofessional about how they write theirs stories and end up feeding the general public with lies and in doing so, mar the reputations of these celebrities.
The ugly side of being a blogger comes with its own consequences especially when the blogger decides to concoct false stories just to get a wider readership online and in doing so, they are faced with a lot of lawsuits, where the person being blogged about feels their image or the brand is being tainted or defamed, and when this happens, the blogger might gets sued and if not lucky may face jail time just to be a deterrent to other bloggers. Bloggers find themselves in difficult situation due to their source of information, most bloggers depend on informants for information to feed their reader with, and in so doing they end up being betrayed by these informants because they feed them with false stories or headlines and when the blogger trusts the informant to the extent of not verifying the news, they end up being held responsible for the false news. Sometimes bloggers are issued death threats just for publishing a false or non-factual information, and without proper security the bloggers are found themselves in harm’s way and it might be detrimental to their health and work in general.
There are a lot of bad sides to blogging, the existing possibilities of things going bad in writing a blog can have a toll on the person who intends to come up with a catchy blog. There are undoubtedly good sides to being a blogger though if care is not taken, you’ll find yourself wanting. So, what are some of these problems associated with being a blogger?
These may include, the blogger finding him or herself in a dilemma as to whether to go ahead and published a story because the person involved in the news might be in close contact or in a relationship being it romantic or an agape relationship. When this happens and professionalism is not exhibited, it will affect the outcome of the articles. Professionalism is key in every industry and bloggers are no exception to that rule. As much as the bloggers want to be the first to report a particular story or issue and stay relevant, its best to act more professional and seek more insight into what they intend to feed their audience with being it social, political, entertainment or lifestyle.
In some instances, the website or the blog site crushes, and when this happens, posting of stories become close to impossible to publish which will in turn affect your credibility as a blogger. Other bloggers plagiarize articles from other bloggers, which makes them very unprofessional and criminal and if taken on by the owner of the original article this will have them in serious trouble with the law.
Internet plays a very major role in executing your duties as a blogger, and in our part of the world where internet is not a luxury but a favor from our internet providers it can be very difficult to work without encountering a few hitches, in so doing it stalls the whole work, making it seem that you are late in coming out with trending news.
It’s with no doubt that celebrities do need the services of these bloggers to get their news out for public consumption. But the issue here is that, most bloggers are not factual about their stories and what even ails them are the kind of headlines they come up with. Some will argue that, these same celebrities will employ bloggers to put out negative or a non-factual news about them just to trend or be in the public’s eye in other to promote their brand or help boost sales for a particular product or services.
Peeved celebrities are of the view that, stories been reported about them should be more factual, if possible less negative and precise and void of baseless lies just to get readers for their blogging sites. In recent times, most celebrities have taken to social media to voice out their grievances towards these bloggers. In light of this uproar, some think it will be appropriate to put in place punitive measures to help curb this social canker.
Blogging is time consuming and each post needs a lot of research just to be sure that the information disseminated is of correct source and as accurate as possible and it’s not a simple copy and paste story. It’s one thing to think of what to write and it takes more than just thoughts to be a blogger, one should have a good writing skill and an intelligent way of sustaining the readers’ interests and in doing all these time flies away and people crave to read something of good content. With all the hustle of writing a blog or an article, you are not guaranteed to have an audience and for people to chance upon your article to read that takes another skill on its own. It will be unfair to categorize all these bloggers as unprofessional, most of our bloggers are very ethical and stick to the norms of the trade and in doing so, it comes with its own merits and benefits. One of the most important benefits of blogging is its ability to help us network, interact with people from all over the world. Constant blogging helps the writer it improves upon their writing skills, because you know that your work will be viewed by a lot of people and in other to avert criticism, you will strive to construct proper sentences and good grammar, in doing so, you broaden your knowledge and be well vested in every aspect of life, because you are always researching and reading anything educative. Blogging in its own way earns you some amount of income because companies, brands and sometimes celebrities tend to advertise themselves of these blogging site, with the intention of getting the readers to patronize their goods or services and in so doing the blogger makes some money on the side and if they are fortunate enough they end getting endorsement deals from these big brands/company and become their personal bloggers. Some blogs are very valuable and reliable source of information and the public know they can get authentic news and updates by logging on to these sites for information, when the blog site becomes a household name because of its reliability, the blogger get some sort of fame, which later becomes a very good way to market yourself to other people. Being a blogger in some sense puts you in a position to make or a cause a change and create awareness in the community and if possible the country at large. This occurs because of the fame attached to being a blogger.
